Horse Training – Jolene Perry and Rachael VanWinkle

Jolene’s first ride on her dressage horse, Tempus Kali – he almost fell asleep…

First rides on horses do NOT have to be stressful. We took our time and broke down each step of this process so we only added one new thing at a time. The result is a horse who is calm and looks forward to being ridden/played with. The goal is to find relaxation in new things. We will always, always encourage curiosity in our horses.

Jo’s first ride on Cosette – she didn’t almost fall asleep, but she did stop often to look back at Jo like – WHY ARE YOU UP THERE?

She is now a kid favorite for leadline lessons…

We take horses in for training on a case-by-case basis, depending on trainer availability as well the individual horse’s needs. We set up either a google drive or google classroom for each horse in for training so the owners can keep track of progress and ask questions throughout their horse’s journey. We are big believers in creating partnerships between owners and horses and that can only happen when the owner is kept in the loop throughout the training process.

WE DO NOT RUSH HORSES THROUGH THE TRAINING PROCESS. Each trainer here takes on no more than 2 horses in for training at a time. If you’d like to come be a part of a training session or watch, let us know. We’re happy to accommodate.

We do not ride horses younger than 4 aside from the occasional LIGHT starting of a 3 year old that has had radiographs. If at any point we feel that your horse is not ready to move on to next steps in training, we’ll let you know to create a new plan forward.

We spend a lot of time on groundwork, including long-lining/ground-driving both in and out of the arena.

Before we begin, we’ll spend some time talking about your hopes for your horse and what you plan on using them for.

If you are training up your own horse, we are very happy to do an occasional “check in” lesson, give you a series of steps to work with, and then do another “check in” lesson when you’re ready or reach a sticking point. This is especially helpful for horses who are younger, slower learners, or who need an extra-gentle hand.

Please see the WHO WE ARE page to learn more about the trainers at Compass Line. Scroll down and go through the pictures to see some of the horses we’ve had the opportunity to play with over the past year.

We are a small, private boarding facility. Space is limited.

Compass Line Equestrian “Class of 2025” (so far)

We LOVE hearing back from the horses who have come through here and seeing the pictures and videos of the owners who are now off and having a blast with their partners. Here are a few shots of them while “in school”
