Lessons, training, and LIFE in general occasionally finds us hitting a plateau…a time where no matter our best efforts, we don’t seem to be moving forward.
This happens when training horses, and while training ourselves to be better riders.
Step One is to simply acknowledge that you’re feeling stuck and be okay with it. Some of my favorite life and creative advice comes from Elizabeth Gilbert in her book Big Magic. She talks about how every time she sits down to write another book, a part of her is afraid. Afraid of a list of things. And instead of running from that fear, she gives it a nod, says welcome to the table, and then dives in.
So, how on EARTH does this apply to how we reach plateaus in our riding?
Again, recognize where you’re at.
Take some time and go back to fundamentals: lunging, ground work, leading your horse around the property and finding a new level of connection. Try a new type of saddle (if you ride Dressage, maybe toss on a western or jumping saddle for a few days). Take some time and trail ride. Set up some ground pole designs (I’ve found that Pinterest is brilliant for ideas) and do some walk rides over poles.
And finally, this is something I tell aspiring authors all the time, it’s okay to take some time off. Sometimes, both you and your horse need a breather before you can climb back on and move forward toward your goals.
Most of all, know that this is a normal part of EVERY PERSON’S LIFE who is working at improving themselves or their skill level. Just know you’re in good company as you’re on the up and down path of so many others.
